Town, district and county: who does what?
Maldon Town Council, Maldon District Council and Essex County Council have different responsibilities. Start with the town council for its local services and civic activities, the district council for matters such as planning, waste collections and council tax, and the county council for services including highways and libraries. Use the service pages to confirm who handles a particular issue.
The villages have their own councils
Heybridge, Heybridge Basin and neighbouring villages have their own local representation. Check the relevant parish council when asking about village facilities or a local meeting, rather than assuming Maldon Town Council covers the whole postal area. The district council’s information is a useful route to finding the appropriate parish.
Libraries and everyday information
Maldon Library is part of Essex Libraries. Its official listing is the place to check opening arrangements, facilities and activities. Libraries are useful beyond borrowing books, whether you need computer access, a quiet place to work or information about local sessions.
Advice and volunteering
Citizens Advice provides an independent starting point for practical problems, while Maldon & District Community Voluntary Service supports local voluntary activity. Contact the organisation directly about its current service or opportunities; the directory is a signpost rather than an advice or emergency service.
Find a club or a place to meet
From sailing and sports clubs to heritage organisations and halls, local groups offer ways to get involved beyond the High Street. Ask a venue about capacity, access, equipment and booking conditions before arranging an event. For a regular activity, check whether membership, advance booking or a trial session is needed.
Getting help and getting around
Use Travel Essex for current public-transport information and the relevant council for local service updates. In an emergency call 999. For a problem that is not urgent, use the appropriate official organisation rather than sending personal or sensitive details to a business directory.
